Nasal strips are designed to gently widen the narrowest part of the nasal entrance. But who benefits most, what does the research actually show, and what can nasal strips realistically do for your sleep?

The Short Answer

Yes, nasal strips can help some people sleep better—especially those who struggle with restricted nasal airflow, nighttime congestion, or mild snoring that starts in the nose.

They do not sedate you or force you to sleep. Instead, they address a possible obstacle to comfortable sleep: a narrow nasal airway. By lifting the sides of the nose outward, a strip may reduce resistance and make nasal breathing easier.

The evidence is mixed because snoring and poor sleep have many different causes. Nasal strips are most useful when the nose is part of the problem. They are much less likely to help when the obstruction is deeper in the throat or when someone has obstructive sleep apnea.

Why Nasal Breathing Matters During Sleep

Your nose does more than provide a route for air. It helps warm, humidify, and filter the air before it reaches the lungs. The nasal cavity also traps particles in mucus and supports the airway's natural protective functions. When the nasal passages feel restricted, breathing requires more effort. During sleep, you may compensate by opening your mouth. That can contribute to:

1. Easier Breathing Through the Nose

The most immediate benefit is often the simplest: breathing through the nose feels easier.

This can be particularly useful when mild congestion, seasonal allergies, a cold, or naturally narrow nasal passages create extra resistance. By widening the nasal entrance, a strip may make each breath feel less restricted without using medication.

That does not mean a strip treats the underlying cause of chronic congestion. It simply helps keep the front of the nasal airway more open during use.

The takeaway is not that nasal strips stop every type of snoring. It is that they may help when restricted nasal airflow contributes to it.

3. Less Mouth Breathing and Morning Dryness

When nasal breathing becomes difficult, the body may switch to mouth breathing. Keeping the nasal entrance more open can make nasal breathing easier and may reduce the urge to breathe through the mouth for some sleepers.

Earlier clinical research summarized in a scientific review reported improvements in morning dry mouth, perceived nasal openness, and sleep quality among some snorers using external nasal dilators. However, results were not consistent across every study, and the strongest benefits appeared in people with meaningful nighttime nasal obstruction. 4. A More Comfortable Bedtime Routine

Sleep quality is not determined by one metric alone. Comfort matters too. If a blocked feeling keeps you focused on your breathing, makes it harder to settle down, or repeatedly wakes you, reducing that sensation may make the night feel calmer.

Studies of nasal strips have sometimes found improvements in self-reported breathing, sleep, or next-day sleepiness even when objective sleep measurements changed little. That difference is important: a person can feel that breathing is easier without the strip acting as a treatment for a medical sleep disorder.

Who Is Most Likely to Benefit?

Nasal strips are most likely to be useful if:

  • Your nose feels narrow or blocked when you lie down
  • You have mild nighttime congestion from a cold or allergies
  • Your snoring becomes worse when your nose is congested
  • You regularly wake with a dry mouth after struggling to breathe through your nose
  • Gently pulling your cheeks outward beside your nose makes nasal breathing feel easier

They may be less effective if your snoring mainly comes from the tongue or throat, if your nasal blockage is severe, or if a structural problem such as a strongly deviated septum is present.

What the Research Does—and Does Not—Show

The science supports a balanced conclusion.

Nasal strips reliably aim to improve airflow at the nasal valve, and several small studies report easier breathing, reduced nasal-related snoring, or better subjective sleep. Other studies have found little or no meaningful improvement in objective sleep outcomes.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of nasal dilators found no significant overall improvement in apnea-hypopnea index, oxygen levels, or sleep architecture in people with sleep-disordered breathing. A more recent systematic review reached a similar overall conclusion: nasal dilators may improve nasal airflow and certain snoring outcomes in selected users, but evidence does not support them as a primary treatment for sleep-disordered breathing. How to Use a Nasal Strip Correctly

Correct placement makes a noticeable difference.

  1. Clean and dry your nose. Oil, moisturizer, and sweat make it harder for the strip to stay attached.
  2. Place it over the nasal valve. Position the strip across the lower bridge of the nose, just above where the nostrils begin to flare.
  3. Press both ends firmly. Rub the strip gently for several seconds to activate the adhesive.
  4. Check the lift. You should feel the sides of the nose being pulled slightly outward, without pain or excessive tension.
  5. Remove it gently in the morning. Warm water can help loosen the adhesive and reduce skin irritation.

If the strip sits too high, it may not open the narrowest part of the nasal airway. If it sits too low, it may not adhere properly.

How to Get the Best Result

A nasal strip works best as part of a consistent sleep routine. You can also:

  • Sleep on your side if back sleeping makes your snoring worse
  • Keep the bedroom cool and comfortably humid
  • Use a saline rinse made with sterile or distilled water when congestion is an issue
  • Wash bedding regularly if dust or allergies affect your nose
  • Avoid alcohol close to bedtime, as it can relax airway tissues and worsen snoring
  • Treat persistent allergies or chronic congestion with advice from a healthcare professional

Try the strip for several nights rather than judging it after one night. Congestion, sleeping position, room conditions, and alcohol can all change from night to night. Pay attention to how freely you breathe, whether you wake with a dry mouth, how often your partner notices snoring, and how refreshed you feel in the morning.

When a Nasal Strip Is Not Enough

Loud snoring can sometimes be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. A nasal strip does not keep the throat open and must not replace medical assessment or prescribed treatment such as CPAP.

Speak with a healthcare professional if you or your partner notices:

  • Pauses in breathing during sleep
  • Gasping, choking, or snorting sounds
  • Loud, persistent snoring
  • Frequent awakenings
  • Morning headaches
